In
order to familiarize oneself with 'shamanizing' in our
modern world, one must be exposed to many different ideas,
concepts and approaches in order to find our way. Take what
works for you and leave the rest, that's my motto. Here are
some books that have affected my path.
- Shamanism-
Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy- by Mircea Eliade.
Published in 1964, 'Shamanism' describes
techniques of practices by shamanic peoples around the
world. Keep in mind, however, that Eliade was an
anthropologist (as many describers of shamanic culture
are) and so his perspectives are from the outside, so to
speak. I came across this book in a thrift store very
recently, after hearing about it for years. The
interesting thing is that as I read about people in
faraway places, I saw similarities in my own practices,
without prior knowledge. I recommend this book so you can
see how cultures shamanize, to give you ideas for your
own practice.
- The
Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner. This book
brought shamanism out in popular culture and allowed many
people to have access to legitimate information about
shamanic culture around the world. (This book is the book
that helped me understand that what was happening to me
happens to other people. quynn) (www.shamanism.org)
- A
Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeline L'Engle. A young
adult book that has all the elements of a masterpiece for
someone any age. A must read for any seeker in modern
times. Too intricate to get into but you must read it if
you want to participate in any of Quynn's
classes.
- Tao
Te Ching translation by Stephen Mitchell. There are
many translations available of this 2,500 year old Taoist
Chinese text, choose one. This small book is a master's
handbook that can be read over and over.
- The
Story of B and Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. These
two books are must-read texts for anyone who is drawn to
the shamanic path. A shaman works to help heal their
communitys spiritual ills and the modern shaman's
community is the human family. These books help explain
how our culture got the way it is, and the only way
things can change.
- The
Global Brain by Peter Russell. An enlightening look
at planetary consciousness.
- Prayers
of the Cosmos translated by Neil Douglas-Klotz. This
book is beautiful because it offers Jesus Christs
words in his native language of Aramaic. They feel much
different than any known Bible version. I like these
words much better.
- Siddhartha
by Hermann Hesse. A story of the man who became the
Buddha, a description of a person finding and becoming
"enlightenment".
- Animal
Speak by Ted Andrews. An excellent encyclopedia of
animal and bird symbolism from around the world. A great
resource for learning more about the animals that reveal
themselves to you through your dreams, spirit journeys
and interactions in the 3-D.
- Love
is in the Earth by Melody. A comprehensive reference
book of stones and crystals.
- The
Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets by Barbara
G. Walker. Anyone who is interested in Women's
Mysteries,. the Goddess, or looking at our culture
through the lens of the feminine perspective must read
this extensive text. An excellent resource.
- Tibetan
book of Living and Dying by Sogy Rinpoche Learning
the truth about "death" and how to deal with it is
essential to living in harmony with Nature. The Tibetan
Buddhists have much insight into this inevitable part of
our existence, how to participate with death as a part of
life.
- A
Path with Heart by Jack Kornfield. An excellent
guidebook for the spiritual path walker
- Singing
the Soul Back Home by Cait'lin Matthews
- The
White Goddess by Robert Graves. A beautiful study of
the influence of Goddess worship in ancient Europe, and
so many other things I cannot list them here.
